How Wyoming's courts are organized

Wyoming has 23 counties, and district court is held in each county seat. The 27 district judges are organized into nine judicial districts. District courts are the general trial courts, with unlimited jurisdiction except for civil cases under $50,000, small claims and misdemeanors. They also hear appeals from lower courts.

Circuit courts are the limited-jurisdiction courts. They hear civil claims up to $50,000, small claims up to $6,000, all misdemeanors, and family violence, stalking, sexual assault protection and eviction cases. A Chancery Court created by 2019 legislation hears commercial, business and trust disputes over $50,000. The Supreme Court is the highest court and hears most appeals from district courts.

Searching Wyoming court records

Wyoming does not offer remote public access to circuit or district court filings. The Judicial Branch says so directly on its eFiling page, and people who are not attorneys of record cannot open those filings through the eFiling system. There is no statewide online name search for trial court cases.

Instead, filings can be viewed free at designated public access terminals in courthouses around the state, called the PASS system in the clerk of district court's office, and at the Wyoming State Law Library. Circuit court records are viewed the same way at the circuit court clerk's office.

Online, the Supreme Court publishes its docket of non-confidential cases free on its public case search. Chancery Court filings are available online to registered users for a fee.

Getting copies and certified copies

For district court cases, contact the clerk of district court, an elected county official who keeps the court record, in the county where the case was filed. For misdemeanors, small claims and other circuit court cases, contact that county's circuit court clerk.

Under the Supreme Court's Rules for Fees and Costs for Circuit Courts, copies cost $1.00 per page, including copies sent by fax or email (since July 1, 2024). Exemplification of a court document is $5.00, a copy of a recorded proceeding is $5.00, and a written record check is $10.00 per name. District court copy charges were not found published online; ask the clerk.

Records that are not public

Wyoming has three adult expungement statutes. Under W.S. 7-13-1401, a person who was arrested but not convicted can petition once at least 180 days have passed since the arrest or dismissal, with no charges pending; a guilty plea, even with deferred adjudication, disqualifies them. Under W.S. 7-13-1501, a misdemeanor conviction can be expunged at least five years after the sentence ends (one year for a status offense) if no firearm was involved. Under W.S. 7-13-1502, a nonviolent felony can be expunged ten years after the sentence, probation and restitution are complete, with many felonies excluded.

Expungement is not automatic. You file a petition in the proper court and serve the prosecutor, the Division of Criminal Investigation and any victims; if anyone objects, there is a hearing. An expunged court file is sealed and visible only to law enforcement. The Judicial Branch posts an expungement handout and self-help forms; for your situation, talk to a lawyer or a legal services office.

Because nothing at the trial level is searchable from home, call the clerk of district court or circuit court in the county first to confirm the case exists, then view it free on the public terminal. The Wyoming State Law Library also offers free viewing of filed documents.
